E' durata davvero poche settimane l'avventura del WR Steve Smith in maglia Bucs. L'ex giocatore dei New York Giants, con cui nel 2007 vinse il Super Bowl, ha infatti annunciato il suo ritiro dal football, a 28 anni e dopo solo sei stagioni in NFL.

I Buccaneers avevano firmato Smith in aprile, nel corso della free agency, e si sperava che l'ex WR di Giants, Rams ed Eagles potesse dare al reparto dei WR maggiore profondità, e magari potesse costituire per Josh Freeman anche un valido bersaglio, nonostante le cifre di Smith delle ultime stagioni fossero decisamente lontane da quelle del 2009, la sua migliore stagione tra i PRO, chiusa con ben 107 ricezioni. 

A questo punto, dietro ai due titolari Jackson e Williams sono rimasti Underwood e Ogletree gli unici ricevitori in grado fornire discrete garanzie, in un reparto non proprio profondissimo...

“I’ve been blessed to play the game that I love at the highest level for the past six years," said Smith. "I will always cherish my time with the New York Giants and our Super Bowl victory in 2007. I also want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers organizations for the opportunities they gave me. This was not an easy decision, but it’s the right decision for me at this time.”
