Josh McCown: "Glennon? Farà una grande carriera"

Rinunciando a draftare un quarterback, Lovie Smith ha chiarito in maniera definitiva che sarà l'accoppiata McCown-Glennon a costituire il reparto dei QB dei Bucs edizione 2014.

Al massimo, ci potrà essere spazio per un terzo QB (Mike Kafka o Brett Smith), ma è evidente che saranno proprio McCown e Glennon i due giocatori che al training camp si contenderanno il ruolo di starter, sebbene Lovie Smith abbia già indicato in McCown il QB che al momento è da considerarsi il titolare del ruolo in questione.

Proprio Josh McCown ieri ha incontrato al stampa, rilasciando alcune dichiarazioni relative - in particolare - al suo più giovane compagno di reparto. Ecco una breve sintesi delle dichiarazioni di McCown, tratte dal Tampa Bay Times.

Che ne pensa dunque il veterano McCown del secondo anno Mike Glennon? Ecco cosa ha dichiarato l'ex QB dei Chicago Bears:
"My hope is that one day Mike Glennon is a Hall of Famer,'' McCown said. "I take great pride in saying you had a small part of in that, man. He has everything out in front of him, so it's just a helping him and making him better. Whenever that time is, that time is. He pushes me and I'm just trying to bring him along and make him better. I think that's good for the Bucs. That's good for our team. Whenever you have two guys pushing and working with other, both parties wanting the best for the team, you can capture something special. That's the hope for Mike and I and I think he's got a real, real bright future. He's super talented, he's a hard worker, he's really sharp and he's going to have a great career.''

Ma quali sono nel dettaglio i pregi di Glennon che hanno colpito maggiormente McCown?
"I just like his skill set,'' McCown said. 'He throws the ball well. His arm strength obviously is well above average. He can spin it, man. He can really spin it. And he's a hard worker, he loves football. You have to have that at that position and he's intelligent. It's just a matter of time for him. He's doing really, really good.

Terminati gli elogi a Glennon, McCown si è poi detto grato per l'opportunità offertagli da Smith, che non solo gli ha fatto sottoscrivere un ricco biennale ma che gli ha affidato il il ruolo di QB starter e di "mentore" del giovane Glennon. Parola ancora a McCown:
"I don't know if you can be a bridge to yourself. I've said this over and over again, the perspective from me is this is an awesome opportunity,'' McCown said. "From where this jouney has taken me, I'm excited about having the opportunity to start for this team...It's humbling.''

Sempre nella giornata di ieri anche coach Lovie Smith ha avuto occasione di ribadire un concetto già espresso più volte in questi ultimi giorni: McCown  è da considerarsi il "presente" dei Bucs, ma è Mike Glennon a rappresentare il "furutro" di Tampa Bay:
“I made it clear right away that Josh McCown is our starter, which he is,” Smith said during an interview on WDAE (620 AM). “And hopefully for quite a few years he will be. And I said I really like Mike Glennon. Mike’s a young player coming up. In an ideal situation you don’t want young players to have to come in and start right away, you want them to be around an established veteran.”

Togliere pressione dalle spalle di Glennon e affidargli il ruolo di backup alle spalle del veterano McCown rappresenta, per coach Smith, la situazione migliore per il secondo anno da NC State:
“This is the best situation for Mike Glennon to be in,” Smith said. “He is our quarterback of the future. He will play for us some day and he’ll play good football. But there’s a progression you have to go through.”

Certo che se si scoprisse che il "franchise QB" ce l'avevamo in casa, alla fine dovremmo ringraziare nientemeno che quel "fenomeno" di Greg Schiano, l'unico a credere nelle qualità di Glennon al punto di draftarlo - a sorpresa - al terzo giro dello scorso draft... !

Intanto, da segnalare lo sfoltimento del reparto dei RB con il taglio di Michel Smith e la firma di un altro undrafted rookie, il LB Steven Jenkins da Texas A & M.
