Black migliora, ma il pieno recupero non è vicino

Quincy Black lascia in campo in barella

Sono immagini che mai e poi mai si vorreebbero vedere nel corso di una partita di football. Un placcaggio all'apparenza come tanti altri, e invece uno dei protagonisti rimane a terra. Entrano i sanitari, i compagni di squadra rimangono impietriti sulla sideline, qualcuno si inginocchia e inizia a pregare...

Spesso il giocatore infortunato si rialza sulle proprie gambe e tutto finisce con un applauso liberatorio, altre volte - per fortuna molto  raramente - accadono vere e proprie tragedie, come nel caso di Eric Legrand.

Domenica, nel corso del match tra Bucs e Chargers, si è temuto che qualcosa di grave fosse accaduto al LB di Tampa Bay, il #58 Quincy Black; dopo un tackle portato ai danni del RB di San Diego, Ryan Mathews, mentre il giocatore dei Chargers si rialzava quasi subito Black rimaneva a terra, immobile. La partita si è interrotta per parecchi minuti, poi Quincy è stato portato via in barella, muovendo però le mani ed alzando il pollice, quasi volesse tranquillizzare compagni e spettatori sulle sue condizioni di salute, ed infine condotto in ospedale per verificare l'entità dell'infortunio.

Nel corso della conferenza stampa di ieri pomeriggio, è stato coach Schiano a fornire gli ultimi aggiornamenti sulle condizioni di salute del giocatore (dal Tampa Bay Times):
"Overall, he's going to be okay,'' Schiano said Monday. "Now, it's a serious injury and he's having some complications with his left arm, so there's still further tests he has to go through before we can make a definitive statement. But it's serious and how much time that means? We're going to have to see. As soon as we know, we'll let you know. But obviously, it's not good.''

Ancora coach Schiano:

"The spine is fine. That stuff. It's just nerves and things coming off. I don't want to say too much because I'm not even exactly sure because I'd hate to misspeak. But I do know that it needs some further tests to get right to the bottom of it and there's some really smart, good doctors that are working on it right now for Quincy which makes me feel good that we're going to get him the best care and get the best solution and get him back to being well.''

L'aspetto positivo è che non ci sono danni alla spina dorsale, e che le condizioni di Black sono nel complesso discrete; rimangono però problemi al braccio sinistro, che devono essere approfonditi per capire l'entità effettiva del danno riportato in seguito al duro KO di domenica pomeriggio. Chiaramente, Black non sarà disponibile per la partita di domenica prossima contro Carolina nè, credo, per i match in programma nel futuro più prossimo. Dopo infortuni così pesanti, i tempi di recupero sono giustamente lunghi ed i controlli devono essere il più possibile approfonditi e meticolosi. 

I giornalisti hanno poi chiesto a Schiano se abbia temuto il ripetersi di un dramma analogo a quello che colpì  Eric LeGrand. Questa la sua risposta:

"Because of what I've been through with Eric, I was a little relieved because I saw him move his right hand,'' Schiano said. "That was later when he gave the thumbs up, but I saw him move it on the field. Because intially, when I saw him still, I was very worried...totally different situation. He was fine, looked me in the eye, talked, speaking, totally different than when that happened before.''

Infine, queste le considerazioni di Ryan Mathews, il giocatore dei Chargers coinvolto suo malgrado nell'infortunio di Black, rilasciate nell'immediato dopopartita:

"We're competing and everything, (but) you don't want to see anything happen like that," Mathews said. "We are all professionals and we are all trying to make a living off of this and to see someone go down like that, it (stinks). I'll say all my prayers and everything to go out to him and his family."
