Lovie Smith ai tifosi: "Dateci tempo"

Nella giornata di ieri Lovie Smith ha incontrato la stampa, ed ha fatto il punto sul momento particolarmente difficile che sta attraversando la squadra.

Dopo sei partite disputate, il record è di 1-5 e due di queste sconfitte sono stati i mortificanti tracolli di Atlanta (14-56) e quello casalingo con Baltimore (17-48), in cui sono stati riscritti addirittura record negativi all-time a livello NFL.

Insomma, un mezzo disastro, soprattutto considerato che le recenti partite di Pittsburgh e New Orleans avevano mostrato dei Bucs in crescita ed in grado di giocarsela alla pari con avversari più quotati come Steelers e Saints.

Poi, domenica scorsa, il tracollo casalingo con i Ravens ha riportato i Bucs indietro di un mese, al punto esatto in cui si trovavano dopo il  disastro combinato al Georgia Dome a metà settembre.

Smith ha definito scoraggianti le prestazioni contro Falcons e Ravens e ha chiesto ai tifosi di concedere a lui e alla squadra altro tempo, garantendo che le cose cambieranno. Ecco le parole del coach, tratte dal Tampa Bay Times:
"I would say first off, I’m disappointed, too,'' Smith said when asked to address the fans. "I agree with the numbers you threw out. That is disheartening. It’s like I would say also, it’s like when you’re in a game, you don’t crown anyone the winner of that game during the game. We’re disappointed right now, is what I would say. We’re disappointed right now. But let’s let it all play out. And yeah, I’ve said that before but the game isn’t over yet. That would be my statement. Give us time. We’ll continue to get guys back. There’s a lot of football left to go. If we were 6-0 right now, would you start buying your Super Bowl ticket? You have to just hold on a little bit is what I would say".

Smith si è detto fiducioso in un cambiamento della situazione attuale, sottolineando l'importanza dell'esperienza per uscire dal tunnel negativo in cui sono piombati i Bucs:
“And I don’t listen to talk radio but I don’t have to. I know what’s out there, we’re all disappointed right now. But I’m going to keep going. We’re all disappointed what? Right now. That will change. I think experience helps you a lot,'' Smith said. "I have been in this situation before a few different times and I just believe in what we’re going to do. But when you start off, there’s a reason why there is something new starting off with that. You do have to crawl before you walk. We didn’t want to do it as much and part of the master plan wasn’t to be in this situation right now. But that’s normally what you do when you start something new. It’s not this ready right away. You have to build that foundation and that’s what we’re doing right now.

Fiducia per il futuro dunque e, come ama ripetere Smith, "we have a lot of football left to go". Ancora parola al coach:
"And keep in mind also, if we had started off 5-1 or 6-0 right now, there’s still a lot of football to go. We haven’t taken this team through the second part of this second quarter. We have a lot of football left to go. I said last week we are a better football team. That game didn’t say that. But we’re doing some good things, some better things, behind the scenes and hopefully we’re going to put it together and we’re going to see that in the games".

Speriamo che in questa settimana di "bye" si possano recuperare alcuni infortunati illustri (da Goldson a Banks) e che il coaching staff riesca a lavorare soprattutto sulla testa dei giocatori, motivandoli a dovere per la seconda parte della stagione. Non sarebbero infatti più ammissibili ulteriori episodi come quello di tre giorni fa o di Atlanta, che limitarsi a definire "sconfitte umilianti" è ancora poco.

Tracolli come questi rischiano inoltre di provocare uno "scollamento" tra squadra e tifosi, uno strappo difficile da ricucire. Domenica scorsa ad esempio, alla fine del primo quarto e con i Bucs sotto per 0-28, molti dei già non tantissimi tifosi in red and pewter hanno abbandonato - disgustati dallo spettacolo immondo - lo stadio.

L'imperativo, per l'HC ed il suo staff, sarà proprio quello di riconquistare la fiducia dei fans e come ho già detto altre volte, dando una risposta positiva a quello che credo la maggior parte dei tifosi chiede a questa squadra, cioè di giocare al 100% delle proprie possibilità e non  - come è accaduto solo pochi giorni fa - con la stessa intensità riscontrabile in un irrilevante match di preseason...

E quindi che Lovie Smith si sbrighi a "svegliare" i suoi ragazzi dal torpore in cui sembrano essere immersi, se non altro per contraccambiare il "sacrificio" di quei pochi che ancora - any given sunday - invece di andare al mare a Clearwater (splendida spiaggia a poche miglia da Tampa) scelgono di arrostirsi sui torridi spalti del Raymond James Stadium pur di sostenere i propri colori, anche sapendo in anticipo a che razza di supplizio andranno incontro! ;-)
