Uomini contro: Greg Schiano vs Josh Freeman

Dove eravamo rimasti nella (tristissima) telenovela che da un  paio di settimane sta tenendo banco a One Buc Place? Ah sì, al fatto che nella partita con i Cardinals a Freeman era stato "vietato" di assistere al match dalla sideline, non si sa bene per quale motivo...

E poi, il giorno dopo, erano uscite storie poco simpatiche, e che violavano pesantemente la privacy di Freeman, circa la possibile assunzione da parte del giocatore di sostanze proibite, con successiva dichiarazione ufficiale da parte di Josh per mezzo del suo agente, per riportare chiarezza sull'intera vicenda.

Ma non è finita qui, e la "saga" necessita di ulteriori aggiornamenti. Martedì mattina Josh Freeman si è presentato puntuale al meeting tra giocatori e CS, ma è stato praticamente "placcato" dal GM Dominik, che gli ha impedito di entrare in sala riunioni dicendogli che non era prevista la sua partecipazione e che Schiano gli avrebbe parlato in seguito, ma in forma privata...

Presumo che nel dialogo tra i due Schiano abbia detto al giocatore quello che poi ha dichiarato ai media, e cioè che non è lui la "gola profonda" che ha fatto trapelare le notizie secondo cui Freeman sarebbe nella "fase 1" del programma che l'NFL prevede per i giocatori che fanno uso di sostanze proibite.

A questo proposito, va segnalato anche l'intervento del boss della Associazione Giocatori (la NFLPA), DeMaurice Smith, che ha espresso grande preoccupazione circa il fatto che notizie così private e personali riguardanti Freeman siano state - in un modo o nell'altro - fatte uscire da One Buc Place, auspicando una indagine congiunta tra NFLPA e NFL per fare chiarezza sull'intera vicenda.

Schiano, come detto, ha più volte negato ogni suo coinvolgimento in questa brutta storia, e a precisa domanda se fosse lui la fonte , ha replicato con un eloquente "absolutely not"... quasi risentendosi per le velate accuse che gli erano piovute addosso. Così Schiano, dal Tampa Bay Times::

"Certainly, that's not what you want to happen at all," Schiano said. "But alluding to the accusations, I don't appreciate that, either, when someone is accused of something that's not true. At the end of the day, it's not a good thing and we need to just keep moving forward. We're beyond it."

E su quale sia adesso il rapporto tra i due, Schiano ha replicato con frasi di circostanza, talmente "false" che poteva anche risparmiarsele:

"I understand the business end of the NFL and I believe he does as well," Schiano said. "I can't speak for him. It's not uncomfortable for me and I don't believe it is for him with our own relationship."

Dal fronte dei giocatori, intanto, arriva la voce di Donald Penn, tra i pochi a spendere parole in sostegno di Josh Freeman. Intervistato da "NFL Radio", ecco cosa ha detto Penn a proposito del QB #5:
“It’s just real tough. You know, I feel bad for Josh being put in this situation,” Penn said. “You know, the stuff that came out yesterday [regarding Freeman's ADHD medicine being monitored in NFL substance-abuse program]and stuff like that, it’s like they’re really trying to bring him down and Josh is a great guy. I mean Josh is a very humble spirit. He’s a very good guy. He’s a very good person and he really cares about him teammates and he cares about his team. I know it’s killing him what’s going on.”

Penn inoltre sottolinea come Josh stia cercando di dare una mano al rookie Glennon, nonostante colui che si sperava potesse diventare "The next franchise QB"  stia vivendo un momento davvero non facile:

“He’s still trying to help Mike out. That’s the kind of guy Josh is and, you know, people don’t see even that side of him because they just hear all the outside stuff. He’s still in Mike’s ear trying to help Mike’s out, you know He’s still in my ear and all the other teammates ears. And it’s not negative at all. It’s nothing negative. Josh has not said one negative thing since all this happened and I talk to Josh all the time. It’s just a tough time right now. We’re getting through it. We’re sticking together.”

Ci sono poi alcune righe di Andrew Brandt, tratte da MMQB.SI.com  sulla situazione e sull'aria che si respira nello spogliatoio dei Bucs e che, se non smentite, sarebbero decisamente inquietanti:

In speaking with agents of several Bucs players recently, I have sensed a common theme: There is an atmosphere of fear and distrust under the current regime in Tampa. Players have told their agents about coaches roaming through the locker room (typically the players’ sanctuary away from coaches) and staff videotaping players on the sidelines during losses to single out players laughing or horsing around. The players also speak to the influx of multiple Rutgers players from Schiano’s past and the use of the phrase “Schiano Men,” a term that clearly does not apply to Freeman.

Freeman may be the next player shipped out by Schiano, joining a list that includes Aqib Talib, Dezmon Briscoe, LeGarrette Blount and Kellen Winslow, Jr., as well as this week’s casualties Ahmad Black and Kevin Ogletree. There appears to be a pattern of players, despite their talents, ending up on the wrong side of the coaching staff, with directives from Schiano to general manager Mark Dominik to remove them from the roster.

Addirittura vengono filmati i giocatori sulla sideline, per "analizzarne" il comportamento, e per sanzionare chi tiene un atteggiamento non consono? Però, che bell'ambientino che deve essere lo spogliatoio dei Bucs...! Mi pare si sia superato anche il limite del ridicolo, eh.. e poi i "colpevoli" sorpresi a sghignazzare mentre i Bucs perdono, che punizioni subiscono, vengono frustati nello spogliatoio...?! Mah...!

Infine, Jim Trotter di SI.com segnala che Freeman nell'ultimo mese è stato multato almeno due volte, per un totale di 31mila dollari. Le ragioni delle multe? "Conduct detrimental", in pratica Freeman avrebbe tenuto un comportamento dannoso per la squadra, e nella multa rientrerebbe anche la famosa intervista non autorizzata concessa dal giocatore ad ESPN.

A questo punto, per il bene in primis di Freeman stesso, auguro a Josh di cambiare aria il prima possibile. Credo si troverebbe meglio, e respirerebbe sicuramente un clima più sano, in qualsiasi delle altre 31 squadre NFL. Mala tempora currunt, per i nostri amati Bucanieri...
