Questa domenica, durante l'intervallo della partita con i Carolina Panthers, entrerà a far parte del "Ring of Honor" dei Tampa Bay Buccaneers uno dei nomi leggendari di questa squadra.
Si tratta di Mike Alstott, l'indimenticabile "A-train", uno di quei fuoriclasse che - insieme a Brooks, Sapp, Lynch - contribuì a cavallo tra la fine degli anni '90 e i primi anni '00 a trasformare i Bucs da team barzelletta abbonato alla doppia cifra alla voce "sconfitte", in una squadra vincente, che raggiunse il punto più alto della sua storia nella magica notte di San Diego, travolgendo i Raiders nel Super Bowl XXXVII e portando in Florida il Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Definire Alstott semplicemente uno dei migliori "fullback" all-time nella storia NFL non renderebbe comunque l'idea dell'importanza e dello spessore di questo giocatore. Portatore di palla eccellente, non solo per chiudere i "third and one", Mike era anche abilissimo nel ricevere fuori dal backfield. Basti dire che nella sua stagione da rookie, il 1996, fu proprio Mike il miglior ricevitore della squadra, con ben 65 palloni ricevuti.
Qualche fumble di troppo, forse, se proprio vogliamo per forza di cosa trovargli un qualche aspetto in cui il #40 avrebbe potuto fare ancora meglio. Ma chi seguiva i Bucs in quegli anni non può che avere un ricordo splendido relativamente a questo giocatore; gradissimo sul rettangolo di gioco quanto esemplare fuori dal campo, in poche parole: un vero e proprio "Numero Uno".
Scelto dai Bucs al secondo giro del draft 1996 da Purdue, Alsott ha disputato 11 stagioni in NFL tutte quante sempre e solo con la maglia - "white and orange" prima e "red and pewter" - poi dei Tampa Bay Buccaneers, prima che un serio infortuno al collo lo costringesse ad appendere il casco al chiodo.
