20 ottobre, "Lee Roy Selmon Day"

Lee Roy Selmon.... molto semplicemente il più grande campione di sempre ad avere indossato i nostri colori, nonché unico membro dei Bucs ad essere presente (almeno sino ad ora) nella Hall of Fame di Canton.

Campione dentro il campo ma anche persona esemplare fuori dal rettangolo di gioco, sia come padre di famiglia che come uomo impegnato per la sua comunità. Insomma, avete presente i vari Talib, Winslow & co., tanto grandi con un pallone di football in mano quanto piccoli una volta usciti da uno stadio? Ecco, Selmon era l'esatto opposto... da tutti ricordato come un vero "Hall of Famer", anche nella vita di tutti giorni.

Lee Roy è scomparso il 4 settembre dello scorso anno, per un attacco cardiaco che lo ha portato via all'età di 56 anni. Ma il suo ricordo vivrà in  eterno, dato che tale è il destino delle leggende.

A maggior ragione da oggi, 20 ottobre, sua data di nascita. Le autorità della Florida hanno infatti stabilito che a partire da quest'anno ed in tutto lo stato della Florida il 20/10 sarà il "Lee Roy Selmon Day", giornata in memoria di un fantastico campione e di un grande uomo che ci ha lasciati troppo presto.

Queste le parole di James Grant, rappresentante della Florida House of Representatives (in pratica l'organismo legislativo dello Stato) nel corso della conferenza stampa di ieri tenutasi a One Buc Place:
"There are a lot of players who have sat either in this room or the old trailers that have come after Lee Roy Selmon," said Grant. "There are a lot of fantastic football players who have worn the uniform after Lee Roy Selmon. But Lee Roy's left a legacy here, and he's set a standard for all of us, whether we ever played football or have any sort of involvement in this community. More important than anything we do is to leave a place better than we found it, to give more than we ever take from it. I hope that as we leave today we do remember that we have an assignment, and that we never forget the impact of Lee Roy and his entire family on our community."

Era presente alla conferenza stampa anche Claybra, la moglie di Lee Roy, che ha preso la parola per un proprio ricordo:
"This is very bittersweet, but mostly sweet," she said. "I just miss Lee Roy being here to witness all of this. "It's wonderful to see the state and the city saluting Lee Roy for the things that he has done in this community and the way that he gave himself away to the city and the state of Florida. Lee Roy was devoted to this community in a very public way, and it's nice to see that love returned to him. He was so deserving."
