Combine, Mariota e Winston incontrano la stampa

Prosegue ad Indianapolis la NFL scouting combine, e naturalmente l'attenzione generale, non solo dei Bucs, è per i due principali QB impegnati al Lucas Oil Stadim, e cioè Marcus Mariota e Jameis Winston,

In attesa di vederli impegnati sul campo da gioco - sabato li vedremo entrambi effettuare dei lanci - tra ieri ed oggi i due giocatori hanno incontrato la stampa, rilasciando dichiarazioni, per lo più di circostanza, circa il loro futuro nel mondo dei Professionisti.

Il primo a parlare con i giornalisti è stato l'ex stella di Oregon, Marcus Mariota. Il nativo di Honolulu si è detto molto sicuro dei propri mezzi e delle proprie possibilità di fare bene in NFL (dichiarazioni tratte dal Tampa Bay Times):

"As a competitor, any person will tell you he’s the best. I truly believe that in myself,'' Mariota said Thursday at the NFL scoring combine. "We’ll see whatever decision is made but I’ve got to go in with that mentality. Any player will stand in front of you and tell you that they’re confident in their abilities. I’m no different. I feel what I’ve been able to do at the University of Oregon, what I’ve learned, has prepared me for this level".

E' stato poi chiesto a Mariota come si sta preparando ad affrontare il passaggio dal college all'NFL, non essendo abituato a chiamare i giochi nell'huddle dato che ad Oregon imperava un attacco di tipo spread.

Questa la risposta di Mariota, che nei giorni scorsi si è allenato con il QB coach dei Browns, Kevin O'Connell, proprio per iniziare a prendere confidenza con un tipo di attacco "tradizionale" a cui il ragazzo non è abituato:

"While working with Kevin O’Connell, he’s given me a play sheet and at night, he’s told me to just read the play calls out loud,'' Mariota said. "That’s something little but as this process goes, it’s going to help me with whatever team that I get to in just speaking in the huddle and articulating the plays. It’s new. I haven’t done it since high school, so it’s been awhile. To everyone, it seems like a little detail but that is kind of a big thing. There’s other things as well as far as the three-, five-, and seven-step drops from center. That’s all stuff I’m been able to work on the last month and will continue to work on.''

Più "frizzanti" mi sono sembrate le dichiarazioni di Jameis Winston, cosa del resto abbastanza inevitabile considerando il carattere più esuberante di Jameis rispetto al più pacato Marcus. 

Se Mariota aveva per così dire "volato basso", il buon Winston ha regalato alla stampa parecchie dichiarazioni interessanti, così riassunte da Rick Stroud del Times:

"He talked about winning the Super Bowl. Next year. Forget Marcus Mariota. He talked about beating Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. He even mentioned wanting to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame".

In primo luogo, dunque, Winston ha detto che lui non sente tanto la sfida con Mariota quanto quelle con Brady, Manning e i top players nel ruolo di QB, visto che il suo obiettivo - in tempi molto stretti - è quello di vincere nientemeno che il Super Bowl:

"I'm not into no competition type of thing. I'm out here to win games and be the face of someone's franchise,'' Winston said. "This is not no competition just between me and Mariota, because one thing about me, I'm plan on winning the Super Bowl next year so it's going to be Jameis versus Peyton Manning and Jameis versus Tom Brady. I want to be viewed like that. After all this combine stuff, you're not going to hear no more about Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. But I want my name to stay relevant the next 15 to 20 years of my career.''

In apertura di conferenza stampa Winston ha ricordato gli errori "off field" commessi negli anni scorsi che ne hanno un po' "macchiato" l'immagine, e che però intende lasciarsi alle spalle:

"I want to let you all know, I know I've made mistakes and I know I have a past,'' he said. "Right now it's about me moving forward and earning the trust of all these teams,'' Winston said. "By saying that, I'm a competitor and I know what I'm capable of doing, so I will be throwing tomorrow at the combine.''

A proposito di alcuni presunti problemi alla spalla che utilizza per lanciare, Jameis ha tranquillizzato la platea:

"I had an MRI just like everyone else. I'm been playing football since I was 4 years old and my shoulder has been fine. I got the same shoulder I done had the past two years at Florida State.''

Infine, queste le parole di Jameis circa la possibilità di essere scelto dai Bucs, e di continuare a giocare a football nello stesso Stato, la Florida, in cui ha frequentato il college: 

"I think it would be a privilege to play in Tampa, period, with the Florida State fan base and everything I have been involved with in the state of Florida. Coach Smith speaking highly of me, that already lets me know I'm a part of their program," Winston said. "I already have a trust factor in with him, and now all I have to do is accept his trust and gain his trust to help him out."
