Ma soprattutto questi sono i primi giorni in cui coach Smith e la squadra si sono ritrovati in vista della nuova stagione, per queii "workout" che le squadra che hanno cambiato HC, come i Bucs, hanno potuto iniziare dal 7 aprile.
Parola dunque ai protagonisti, e cioè a quei giocatori che, reduci da un biennio poco felice trascorso agli ordini del sergente dei Marines Greg Schiano, hanno avuto in questi giorni il primo approccio con un coach ugualmente esigente ma dai modi decisamente meno "marines style" rispetto a quelli che erano un po' il marchio di fabbrica dell'ex HC di Rutgers.
Ecco come il LB Lavonte David - dalle pagine del Tampa Tribune - descrive il primo contatto con il nuovo Head Coach:

Stando alle parole di Lavonte David però, non solo l'HC ma tutto il nuovo coaching staff ha destato una buona impressione nella truppa:
“All the coaches are real cool, even the strength and conditioning coaches,’’ David said. “There’s a real cool vibe around here right now, and I do think that will (transfer to the field). I mean, I’m not a rah, rah guy, so everybody just staying calm and keeping their composure, that can definitely translate to the field to where, you’ve got a situation where the crowd is going crazy or something bad is happening and everyone is keeping their composure on the sidelines. That will just help us build more confidence that will help us overcome those kinds of things. So it’s cool. It’s only been two days, but it’s cool. (Smith) is a quiet guy, a laid-back type of guy. He’s all about respect and being a professional in this league.’’

Un giocatore forse non particolarmente lieto del siluramento di Greg Schiano è invece il QB Mike Glennon, che con l'ex HC sarebbe stato indiscusso starter e che invece con Lovie Smith è già stato retrocesso a riserva di Josh McCown, sempre ammesso che dopo il draft - dal quale arriverà quasi sicuramente un QB - il buon Mike si ritrovi ad essere ancora un giocatore dei Bucs... ecco l'opinione di Mike Glennon:
“I don’t remember exactly what I said (in return),’’ Glennon said. “I just realized I’m going to have to continue to work hard and prove myself. I mean, I know the NFL is a business and at different times you may have to take on different roles.’’
Infine, parola al veterano forse più importante di tutti, essendo - al momento - l'unico "vero" WR che Tampa Bay si ritrova a roster, e cioè Vincent Jackson; ecco il suo pensiero, sempre a proposito del nuovo HC:
“He’s everything I thought he would be and more,” Jackson said. “I was able to come in about two weeks after (he was hired) to meet him and some of the staff members. He’s a smart man – very thought out and well-planned. He does everything with a purpose. Every minute in this building is going to be useful for us and make us better as men, as well as football players. I’ve heard nothing but great things about him and now I can see why.”
Inevitabili, dopo il "cupo" biennio trascorso avendo in sottofondo gli urlacci e gli improperi di Greg Schiano, le parole al "miele" da parte di tutti i giocatori per coach Lovie Smith. Speriamo che alle dichiarazioni ricche di "buoni propositi", seguano anche dei fatti concreti e, soprattutto, qualche vittoria in più rispetto alle pochissime racimolate nelle ultime stagioni...
