Aqib Talib, il punto della situazione

Giorni decisivi per Aqib Talib...

Aqib Talib è un giocatore importante dei Tampa Bay Buccaneers: è il miglior cornerback della squadra, nonché un atleta ancora giovane (26 anni appena compiuti) che ha davanti a sé ancora molti anni di football professionistico ad alto livello. Forse sarebbe meglio dire "avrebbe" e usare il condizionale, però, quando si parla di Talib, visto il processo che lo attende nei prossimi giorni e che – qualora avesse esito negativo – potrebbe chiudere in anticipo e nel peggiore dei modi la sua carriera. Tra l’altro, gli stessi Buccaneers sono in pratica obbligati a pianificare l’imminente draft proprio in base a quella che sarà la sentenza, visto che non è esattamente la stessa cosa affrontare la nuova stagione sapendo di potr contare (o meno) su un giocatore del calibro di Talib.

Ma andiamo con ordine. Esattamente un anno fa, il 21 marzo 2011, Aqib Talib e sua madre Okolo, vennero accusati di aver cercato di uccidere (!) a colpi di pistola Shannon Billings, il boyfriend della risepttivamente sorella/figlia, Saran... questa, in sintesi, la vicenda di "cronaca nera" così come la descrisse all’epoca il St. Petersburg Times:
The arrest of Talib and his mother Okolo stems from their roles in a domestic disturbance March 21 involving his sister, Saran, 43, and her boyfriend, Shannon Billings, police said.
Police said they arrived in the 900 block of Green Pond Drive in Garland, a Dallas suburb, at 7:30 p.m. after a 911 caller reported fighting, including gunshots. Police said they found Billings, 40, alone outside his residence.
According to a report Monday in the Dallas Observer, which cited the Garland police and two unnamed sources familiar with the case, Talib attempted to pistol-whip Billings with a handgun, which was dropped in the struggle. Billings picked it up and began running. Okolo produced another handgun and fired at least three times before Aqib used it to fire twice more at Billings, according to the report.

Tornando ad oggi, dal sito joebucsfan.com si apprende che la data del processo prevista per il 26 marzo, è stata posticipata al 16 aprile:
Aqib Talib’s felony assault with a deadly weapon trial date in Dallas has been moved to April 16 and the case will be tried, Talib’s attorney Frank Perez told JoeBucsFan.com this afternoon.“We were upset the date was moved; we were ready to go. But there was a personal situation with the prosecutor having a child on the way so that’s where we are,” Perez said.
Perez said there have been no substantive discussions about a plea agreement and he’s not interested in a deal. Talib will stand trial. He also said he completely expects Talib to be exonerated.
“I expect the trial to last three or four days. There are a lot of witnesses,” Perez said.
If the timetables hold true, justice will find Talib prior to the NFL Draft, something the Bucs must be pleased to hear.

Sempre lo stesso sito mette in evidenza la "spiacevole" situazione in cui si trova attualmente l'accusatore di Talib, Shannon Billings, l'ex boyfriend della sorella di Talib che venne preso a revolverate (così almeno sostiene l'accusa) da Aqib e dalla madre di Aqib stesso.
Shannon Billings, 41, the former live-in boyfriend of Talib’s sister, is sitting in Dallas County jail on a bond of $265,000 after being arrested March 1, 2012 on charges of indecency with a child/sexual contact.
Billings, a registered sex offender with the state of Texas, was also arrested Dec. 10, 2011 on a charge of sexual assault and was jailed on $25,000 bond. However, the grand jury returned a ‘no bill,’ in the case, according to court records.

Mah, sperando che tutto possa finire nel migliore dei modi per il nostro CB, e soprattutto che si riesca a fare chiarezza su cosa sia successo veramente quel 21 marzo di un anno fa, sarei poi curioso di vedere come un HC come Greg Schiano, con la fama da "duro" e poco propenso alla filosofia del "lasciar correre" cara a Raheem Morris, riuscirà a gestire e a tenere "sotto controllo" una testa caldissima come quella di Talib. E magari fosse solo quella di Talib, la "testa torrida" dalle parti di One Buc Place...!
