Inizia il TC e Lovie Smith nomina Winston QB starter

E' tempo di Training Camp, finalmente!

Nella giornata di ieri giocatori e coaching staff si sono ritrovati a One Buc Place, pronti ad iniziare gli allenamenti in vista dell'ormai imminente avvio della stagione 2015.

Iniziamo con alcune notizie direttamente dall'infermeria: due elementi di una certa importanza, sebbene riserve, e cioè il DT Akeem Spence (schiena) e il WR Louis Murphy (caviglia) risultano tra gli elementi alle prese con problemi fisici e dunque non in grado di allenarsi con i compagni.

Akeem Spence è stato inserito nella "physically unable to perform list", mentre Murphy si trova nella "non-football injury list" e potranno essere spostati nel roster dei giocatori attivi non appena recupereranno dai rispettivi infortuni.

Il primo giorno di Training Camp è stata anche l'occasione, da parte dell'HC Lovie Smith, di fare chiarezza su un punto relativamente al quale - chi sarà il QB starter dei Bucs nel 2015 - non è che ci fossero in realtà molti dubbi...

La prima scelta assoluta dell'ultimo draft - Jameis Winston - è stato ufficialmente nominato QB titolare per Tampa Bay, decisione inevitabile anche conoscendo la stima (modesta) che Smith nutre nei confronti di Mike Glennon.

Tratte dal Tampa Tribune, ecco le parole di coach Smith relative all'investitura di Jameis Winston:
"Winston will take the first reps (today), and we’re excited about that,” Smith said shortly after players reported to One Buc Place for the team’s 40th training camp. “We brought him here to be our quarterback and we feel like he’s ready to take this next step. He needs to move into that role right now, and we all feel good about him going there."

Lovie non sembra avere molti dubbi sul fatto che il prodotto di FSU sia pronto a scendere in campo da titolare sin dall'esordio in NFL:
"The mental part, the physical part and just being a quarterback in the NFL and taking all the criticism that goes with it — he’s ready for that," Smith said. "So, I feel good about this. We put Jamies through a process in the offseason, getting him limited reps and working him with both (the first and second teams). But eventually you have to put him in that (lead) position and just let him go."

Ovviamente contento il giocatore, che commenta così la "promozione" a QB starter:
"I’m so anxious to get started,” Winston said. “I’m not thinking about speed of the game or the intensity or anything like that, I’m just ready to play football."

Ma è chiaro che non sarà sufficiente il solo Jameis per cambiare volto ai Bucs; sarà necessario che anche tutti gli altri giocatori forniscano un contributo di gran lunga maggiore rispetto a quanto accaduto nello scorso campionato. Ancora Lovie Smith:
"Offensively, we have to do some things better, mainly running the football,” Smith said. “And defensively, we have to start the season the way we finished up (last year), and that’s playing a lot better defense than we did early on."
